Mrs. Cartwright’s Jacket: Part 1

I finally had a chance to take some pictures of the jacket I am working on for Mrs. Cartwright. Enjoy!

019

The inspiration… A Zone Front Jacket from the Kyoto Costume Institute.

018

The fabric, a navy silk velvet, and the trim, gold fringe. I will need to trim the trim a bit, it is too long.

023

Drafting the Pattern. I used her Riding Habit bodice and JP Ryan Robe l’Anglaise bodice as a guide.

022

025

The first mock up on the form. The dress form does not give it the right look, but it allows me to get an approximation of her measurements. It’s at the fittings that I do most of the adjustments. Also, the bodice will lay smooth on the wearer, without the folds caused by the dress form.

027

I put the mockup on the form with the seams on the outside. It looks really goofy, but it allows me to make adjustments. The peplum will be pleated and there is not a waist seam.

I will keep posting the progress. Have a lovely Thanksgiving!

Is a zone front jacket when it cuts away at that sharp angle in the front?

I'm falling in love with the 1790's more and more as time goes on - can't wait to try making something for myself! I will watch your progress jealously! :)

Thank you for these details. The photos help me to think this out. There is a friend who wants me to make a riding habit for her, but I keep trying to talk her into getting someone else, since I am still in the learning phase and therefore not that great. She's not listening to me. Anyway, I am thinking about that as I watch how you do this, since I can't imagine how I would sew for someone who lives over 2 hours away. Thanks for the photos and explanation!

What a wonderful project. I will happily follow the progress of this jacket...and I do love the gold fringe!

Lauren,

When do you find time to do all of your sewing what with working full-time? I am bound and determined to have more homemaking time this coming year, but is definitely a challenge!
